The Central American and Caribbean Games have officially been declared closed following a bright and colourful closing ceremony that took place in Barranquilla. The ceremony included music, dancing, and an impressive display of fireworks. The Roberto Melendaz Metropolitan Stadium was full to the brim as the host country performed one of the most memorable closing ceremonies to date.
Barranquilla Mayor Alejandro Char, as well as Steve Stoute, Central American and Caribbean Sports Organisation President, officially ended the tournament together.
Char told the audience that the event showed that there was nothing too big for the city of Barranquilla. He continued by saying that the people of Barranquilla will be with all attendees forever, and that the closing ceremony was not the end of the journey. Stoute added that it was the best games in their history.
Among the gold winners of the tournament finals, Puerto Rico was at the top of the list, having beat Colombia 91-68 at the men’s basketball final.
Cuba won 75-73 during overtime in their game against the Dominican Republic, which was part of the bronze medal contest. Colombia saw more success during the men’s marathon when Colombian Jeisson Saurez won the event with a time of 2 hours, 29 mins and 54 seconds. Next was Daniel Vargas of Mexico, followed closely by Williams Julajuj of Guatemala.
Mexico finished the highest overall with 132 golds, 118 silvers, and 91 bronzes. The next Central American Games are to be hosted by Panama City.
