Christ Nikau, the chairman of Football Federation Australia, has given the strongest hint yet that Australia and New Zealand will both be submitting a joint bid for the chance to host the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Both countries had been preparing their individual bids for the event, but with an announcement from FIFA earlier this year in August that the 2023 Women’s World Cup would be expended from 24 to 35 teams, speculation around the joint has since increased.
Nikau told reporters that hey were in talks with new Zealand, and that they expect the final decision will be made sometime in early December, with his statement being released at the same time as the Victorian government announcing their support for the bid. He added that they have been in constructive talks with Football New Zealand and that they have a good relationship. He finally added that the duel bid would make sense as the competition will be going from 24 to 32 countries, meaning that the number of venues will go from six to eight to eight to ten, and a joint bit would be possible.
Other bidders that are currently running include South Korea, North Korea, Japan, Argentina, South Africa, Colombia, and Brazil. New Zealand Football has yet to release their own statement on the matter, although earlier this year in March NZF chief executive Andrew Pragnell stated that their door is always open in regards to a joint bit.
