Retired beloved Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho has been released from house arrest – this after the star spent a total of 5 mines detained in Paraguay for having entered the country by trying to make use of a false travel document.
Ronaldinho and his brother, Roberto de Assis Moreira, were both arrested in March when they were discovered by Paraguay border officials to be in possession of false Paraguay passports. The brothers were at the time reportedly attempting to enter the country in order to conduct “business”. Both were found to be in possession of false travel documents.
The football star and his brother were on Tuesday (New Zealand time) released from mentioned detainment after they were handed a two-years suspended sentence by Paraguayan Judge Gustavo Amarilla. Each of the brothers were furthermore ordered to pay a fine of $100,000 – making $200,000 in total fines payable in return for their conditional freedom.
According to attorneys Tarek Tuma and Alcides Caceres, their two high-profile clients will now return to Brazil and settle in capital city Rio de Janeiro. As for the reasons behind the shortened legal process and sentence, Paraguay prosecutor Marcelo Pecci has revealed that mercy was shown to the two men because of their having admitted to having attempted to enter the country with falsified legal documents. Had the brothers not received a shortened sentence they could have faced spending up to five years behind Paraguay prison bars.
Ronaldinho turned 40 during his time spent in detention in the South American country.
