Kiwi and former world No. 1 golfer Lydia Ko remains in the running for a medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games – despite two late bogeys placed during the second round of the women’s event.
While Ko remains in the running for a place on the podium, she’ll have to put in the work if she’s to beat her own personal best achieved in Rio five years ago. Not only is she up against her own bar, but also against that of the challenging pace set by American opponent Nelly Korda.
The latter has been running at it full throttle, shooting her way to four shots clear of the “next best” to 13-under for the tournament. Her stellar performance meant an unbelievable nine-under 62 – a performance once again emphasising her position as best women’s golfer in the world this year.
Following Korda’s opening with four pars, she managed to fly high off an eagle and four birdies. She then added five more birdies – thereby setting herself up for a six-shot lead by the time she reached the 18th tee.
Even so, the second round of the event hasn’t been all bad for Kiwi Lydia Ko. After having started the day’s play sharing the 16th, she’s now tied for 9th at five-under-par halfway.
All in all, the New Zealander is now four shots off second place. Jointly holding the position right now are Aditi Ashok (India), Emily Pedersen (Denmark), and Nanna Koerstz (also Denmark).
