A top central district racing jockey has been admitted to Wellington hospital and put in an induced coma after having suffered a bad fall in Foxton.
Jockey Rosie Myers during Tuesday’s Foxton trials fell from her horse after it won an event. The fall is believed to have been caused by a blow sustained from a kick by a horse behind her. She was immediately following the incident airlifted to Wellington Hospital.
According to Myers’ husband, William Fell, the horse ridden by his wife appeared to have become startled by something present on the track. The incident caused Myers to fall from the horse, and be trodden on the head by another horse that had come from behind and failed to swerve on time. According to Fell, though still in an induced coma, his wife appears to be stable and is currently undergoing the necessary and usual procedures following an event of this nature.
According to Racing Integrity Unit General Manager Mike Godber, an inquiry has since been done and the report completed and handed to WorkSafe. A WorkSafe spokesperson has confirmed receipt of the report and said that the relevant people were now working on determining which steps will have to be followed next.
Myers commenced her jockeying career back in 2006 and has since then ridden an impressive 650 winners. She has won several Group I events and is a three-time winner of the prestigious Thorndon Mile at Trentham. In 2018, she won the $1 million Karaka 3YO Classic.
