Team New Zealand, America’s Cup winners, gave the public an early glimpse of the radical new ships to sail at Auckland 2021. On Thursday, a day before the official launch, they revealed the 75-foot foiling monohull on the forecourt of their Auckland base. Shore crew were seen fitting the huge mast to the boat with the use of a large crane – it stands 26.5 m from the deck.
The sleek machine from New Zealand was coloured red, black and grey and featured sponsors for the team. The 20.7 m hull glittered with its proudly featured 2 m bowsprit. Aerodynamics intended the hull to assist boost velocity while on the foils during its time out of the water. The boat also has a bulb-like feature that is built entirely through its centre. The unexpected appearance will take off some pressure from the official launch, where the team’s promoters, vendors and important fans were welcomed along with what will certainly be a large meeting for everyone involved.
The ship is the first to be fully released in the latest generation. Teams are able to construct a second ship, and Team New Zealand is already operating on the layout tweaks for that ship, which will be defending the Auld Mug. This first ship will be refined over much of Auckland’s spring and summer as the crew will fine-tune their sailing on the new craft. The first events at an America’s Cup World Series tournament in Italy will take place in early April.
